About Housing Co-ops
Housing cooperatives are member-owned and provide at-cost housing for their members. There is no landlord and therefore no profit-motive. As a member you must purchase membership shares in the Co-op, which entitles you to a lifetime residency and part ownership of the co-op as a whole.
Decisions about how the co-op is governed, and ultimately managed, are made democratically by the members through the election of a volunteer board of directors. Members can participate in their co-op’s governance and in the decision-making process by casting a vote at member meetings. Each member has one vote contributing to the governance of the co-op.
Members work together to keep their housing well-managed and affordable. Participation in co-op activities helps to build a strong sense of community. Members interested in making a greater contribution to the co-op can either join a committee or put their name forward for election to the board of directors.
